Types of Specialty Contacts We Carry
At Omni Eye Specialists, our specialty contact lens center offers a wide range of lens types designed to address different vision needs and conditions, especially for patients who have had difficulties with standard contacts in the past.
From scleral lenses, which are ideal for those with keratoconus or dry eye syndrome, to multifocal and toric lenses that correct presbyopia and astigmatism, we make sure that each patient finds their perfect match and experiences the comfort and clarity they have always desired.
Rigid Gas-Permeable (RGP) Lenses
These rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses cover only the pupil of the eye and offer advantages such as custom-made fitting, a longer lifespan, and superior clarity. Eye doctors often prescribe RGPs for conditions such as dry eye, ocular surface disease, and keratoconus.
Hybrid Lenses
Hybrid lenses combine the advantages of RGP and soft contact lenses. The central part is comprised of an RGP lens surrounded by a soft lens. This design provides the comfort and ease of handling of a soft lens while offering the clear vision of an RGP lens. Hybrid lenses are especially suitable for patients with conditions like keratoconus and are also available in multifocal options for patients with presbyopia.
Scleral/Semi-scleral Lenses
These custom-made rigid lenses have a larger diameter, covering the entire cornea and sitting on the sclera. They are especially advantageous for patients with ocular surface disease as they aid in retaining tears on the eye's surface. For individuals with keratoconus, these lenses can function as a cornea replacement. We also suggest semi-scleral lenses for patients who have undergone refractive surgery and still have symptoms.
Piggyback Lenses
Piggybacking involves placing an RGP lens on top of a soft contact lens. This technique combines the comfort of a soft lens with the clarity of an RGP lens, making it an excellent solution for patients who currently wear RGP lenses but are experiencing discomfort. The soft lens forms a protective barrier around the eye, reducing discomfort and the risk of potential abrasions.
Specialty Contact Lens Evaluation
Before prescribing specialty contact lenses, it is essential to undergo a comprehensive eye exam to ensure that you are a suitable candidate. This examination includes a series of tests that assess your eyes' condition, shape, and overall function. Although these tests may lengthen the duration of your appointment, the results are definitely worth it. The evaluation typically includes procedures such as Anterior Segment OCT and Osmolarity Tear Testing, among others.
To experience the comfort and clarity that you deserve, we invite you to request a specialty contact lens evaluation with us at Omni Eye Specialists.
